Histomoniasis (Blackhead Disease) PCR Test is a laboratory PCR assay used to detect Histomonas meleagridis, the protozoan parasite responsible for histomoniasis in poultry. Designed for commercial poultry operations, this test supports disease investigations, routine surveillance, and biosecurity monitoring.

Histomoniasis primarily affects turkeys but can also occur in chickens and other gallinaceous birds. Infection can cause depression, reduced appetite, weight loss, yellow diarrhoea, poor growth, and increased mortality, particularly in susceptible flocks. Early laboratory confirmation supports timely management decisions and disease control.

Need Help Interpreting Your Results?

Our avian veterinary team can assist with interpreting your laboratory results and provide guidance on treatment options, biosecurity, and flock health management through a telemedicine consultation.

How it Works

Once you have purchased the PCR test from our site,

  1. You will be mailed out 5 swabs, instructions and a submission form.
  2. Collect samples as per the included instructions.
  3. Mail the form and the samples to the lab address given.
  4. Results will be emailed through once received by us.

What is Histomoniasis (Blackhead disease)

Histomoniasis, also known as "blackhead disease," is a parasitic infection that affects poultry, particularly chickens and turkeys. The causative agent of histomoniasis is a protozoan parasite called Histomonas meleagridis.

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a molecular biology technique used to amplify and analyze DNA. In the context of Egg Drop Syndrome, PCR is employed to detect the presence of the virus in samples.
